In loving memory of the great Onsi Nagy - we look back at an archive of work that shaped generations, by pioneers who are responsible for forging the foundation of modern Egyptian art as we know it today. Mohamed Nagy (Alexandria, 1888–1956) established Egypt’s first modern painting school and in 1968, an eponymous museum dedicated to his artwork was opened in the Giza district of Cairo. Nagy initially studied law in Lyon, and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. In his diplomatic function, he worked as a cultural attaché in Rome and later managed the Egyptian Academy of Fine Arts and directed Egypt’s Museum of Modern Art. As an artist, Nagy received the golden prize of the Salon du Paris for his “Egypt Renaissance.” He believed in the social mission of art; in his paintings he portrayed Egyptians within their ethnic variety and he continuously tried to bridge the gap with his ancestors. Nagy is a key pioneer of Modern Art in Egypt. Effat Nagy (Alexandria, 1905 – 1994) is one of the pioneers of modern Egyptian art. She studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. Her early work used simple abstract forms on multiplied surfaces transformed into box-like objects. She experimented with materials such as wood and leather in collages and assemblages, created mystical and magical works from found items. Nagi was preoccupied with the idea that an object that loses its cultural significance once it is removed from its original location and becomes more collectible. She relied on the mystical symbolism in ancient Egyptian, Coptic and folk art.
