Ain Dubai: Icon of UAE's Dubai Tourism Grinds to a Halt

Desperate to diversify its economy majorly from oil to tourism, Dubai had been promising and chasing everything enormous. Ain Dubai, the world’s tallest Ferris wheel, had been one such Emirati vision. Construction on the massive wheel began in May 2015. It opened in October 2021, fitting right in the city boasting of the world’s tallest building (Burj Khalifa). Ain Dubai surpasses the height of both the London Eye and High Roller. It is 820ft high and capable of carrying 1,400 passengers. The mega-wheel dominates the skyline, as it stands tall on an artificial island. The Bluewaters Island is surrounded with Dubai’s most expensive real estate and a Caesars Palace. But, Ain Dubai stopped turning only 5 months after, in March 2022. It was supposed to be closed for a month for "periodic enhancements" But, operators announced in April 2023 that the wheel would be closed indefinitely. Aled Davies, the director of postgraduate teaching in Cardiff University’s engineering program, said: “When you extend beyond a certain scale, you enter the unknown, where issues that are normally minor can become suddenly major.”. Residents of Bluewaters Island were guessing that the wheel started vibrating loudly. Fearing repercussions from the Emirati authorities, all spoke anonymously. Some said it shook the ground and shattered windows when it turned Others said the foundation was compromised, or something broke inside the main axle. A waiter said Ain Dubai is at a risk that it could sink or fall, as it’s heavier than the man-made island. Ain Dubai is just one of the many property busts in the Emirate. The city often appears in the headlines with the idea of building the next big thing. A $4bn project, Dubai Pearl was demolished two decades of on-and-off construction. The second Palm Island and the World project had been long-stalled. The UAE’s quest to save its drowning economy has led to multiple sinking projects.
